Certified Real: What a Signed Photo Can't Prove

Apple wants your iPhone to swear a photo is real, but a Nikon camera, a spirit photographer from 1869 and a Gaza freelancer show what a signature can and can't vouch for.

About this episode

In September 2026 Apple introduced Reference Image for the iPhone 18 Pro, a camera mode built to prove that a photo came from a real sensor and not from AI. It is the most ambitious attempt yet to give ordinary people a 'this is real' seal. A year earlier, a hobbyist on a camera forum got a flagship authenticity camera, Nikon's Z6III, to sign images it never captured. Wren and Theo follow the seal from the sensor to Apple's cloud darkroom to your Instagram feed, and look at what it actually proves.

The trail runs back to 1869, when the spirit photographer William Mumler walked free because nobody could prove exactly how he faked his ghosts. It runs forward to a proposed federal evidence rule, and to photographers whose true pictures were doubted anyway. The question is no longer only whether fakes can be caught. It is who has to prove a picture is real, and what happens to the people who can't.

Corrected The 3 to 30 frame range and the machine-learning tone mapping are not confirmed: the check gives about 2 to 15 or more frames and does not tie tone mapping to machine learning.

  • Police Justice John Dowling dismissed the Mumler case: though morally convinced of trickery, he ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the specific method of fraud, a decision critics said wrongly required explaining the exact mechanics of the crime.

Why it was removed: The cited excerpt only covers trial testimony from Elmer Terry and does not mention the dismissal. The independent check backs the ruling and the critics' view but names the judge Joseph Dowling.
