The Float: Whose Money Is a Wedding Deposit?

A Raleigh wedding studio kept taking deposits until fifteen days before it shut its doors, and the case shows what a deposit really is once the bookings stop.

About this episode

In January 2026, Holly Christina Photography in Raleigh was still taking deposits from couples. Fifteen days later it stopped operating. This month a Wake County judge entered a default judgment of about one point seven million dollars in restitution and penalties. Couples still have no photos, and the state is still trying to find out where the money went. In the same quarter, Picture This Wedding in New Hampshire announced it was closing and planned to file for Chapter 7, and Korea Artiz Studio in Singapore stopped operating. Della and Cal follow the money through all three cases and back to the overnight closure of the Sears and Walmart portrait studios in 2013.

This episode looks at the structure almost every wedding business runs on: money paid months ahead for work that doesn't exist yet. Della and Cal ask who that money belongs to, why the law protects prepayments for a cruise or a funeral and appears not to protect them for a wedding, and what one number a solo studio should know about its own float. The judgment was entered by default, so the State's allegations were never tested at trial. The owners have pointed to illness.
